I have been creating content for almost 6 years now. I turned myself from a novice writer to a creator who succeeded in creating top-ranking content.

Here are my suggestions for beginners looking to have a flourishing career in content writing.

1. Understand the essence of “Keyword”

I will focus on creating web content that is intended to attract Google’s traffic.

Why would someone look for that keyword on Google, What is the purpose behind searching a particular term on Google?

For example: If someone is searching, for “Best places to visit in Boston”.

What is the purpose?

The searcher wants to visit Boston and look for attractive places.

Now we need to create our content around this “search intent”. Our endeavour should be to create helpful content that satisfies the purpose of the search.

2. Detailed Research

Now, you will enter this keyword on Google and further research. Here are the things you will focus on:

a. Related keyword used by competitors, example “Boston’s best places”, “Where to go in Boston” etc.

b. Word length of article. Understand the word range of articles that are ranking for that particular keyword.

c. Links to internal documents and external resources. To make article informative, engaging and research based, using links to internal related pages and external websites is important. Understand the competitor’s strategy.

d. Information covered and missing information. See what they have missed. Put yourself in the shoes of searcher and see what else can be helpful.

Go beyond “keyword”. Like in our example, share the weather, timings, entry fees, suitable for kids or not etc.

3. Create a Rough Draft

I note everything that is important as a short notes. When I read competitor’s articles, I also create my heading structure, subheadings, information under subheadings etc.

Creating a rough draft together with research ensures you are not missing anything.

4. Elaborate, Add Information, Add Words

Now you know what competitors have covered, your ideal word count of the article, and you have your rough draft already, start adding your content, your words, your thoughts.

Don’t stop yourself, write as many words as you get in your mind. Don’t stop yourself.

5. Proofread

Ideally, it is always good that someone else proof read your content. But you can also read it from top to bottom. Remove redundant information, remove additional words, make your content around the targetted words.

6. Pro Tip

Now that your content is created, make sure of hygiene factors like plagiarism, AI usage readability etc.

I will cover them in my next article soon.

Your content should be original, should not be copied, no AI use.

Also focus on readability, make it easy to read, like short paragraphs, easy words, proper formatting like bold italic underlines.

That’s all for today.
